Our Mission: To enrich the lives of anyone and everyone who is associated with our company.

Throughout the world, Fred Astaire’s name is synonymous with excellence in social dancing. The legacy of Astaire, the greatest multi-talented dancer of all time, is the proud claim of the only international dance studio organization in North America founded by Astaire and bearing his name: Fred Astaire Dance Studios.

Like our famous name, the multi-level management structure of Fred Astaire Dance Studios is bedrock solid, a hallmark of business excellence. In each of our studios, including the new sites that are continuously opening, up-to-the-minute marketing programs, management seminars, and weekly analyses (both regional and national) provide direct, effective support for our unique educational program. Rigorous instructor training and materials, including tried-and-true lesson plans, manuals and videos, combine with Astaire’s trademark techniques to maintain our first-place position on the most competitive edge of the dance market.

For more than 60 years, our curriculum has been rooted in teaching methods perfected by the master himself — Fred Astaire. The success of these methods remains unchallenged, and we have continued to be the leader in dance instruction since 1947.

Our History

The first Fred Astaire Dance Studio opened March 7, 1947, at 487 Park Avenue in New York City, the brainchild of co-founders Fred Astaire and studio executive Charles L. Casanave, Jr. Astaire himself developed the dance curriculum and instructional techniques. “Some people seem to think that good dancers are born,” he once remarked. “But all the good dancers I have known are taught or trained.”

Soon after opening, the company franchised its first studio to dance business executive, Robert Wayne. Upon his death in 1954, sons Chuck and Chester teamed up to lead the New York office until 1962, when they moved the business to Miami. In 1990, it was sold to Commonwealth Capital, L.P., a New York-based investment company. In 1993, ten enterprising Fred Astaire Dance Studio Area franchisors bought the company and strengthened it through their innovative ideas for dance training and franchise development. Since 2002, Jack Rothweiler has been the company’s president and chief executive officer.

Teaching: Our Philosophy, Staff, and Curriculum

The philosophy at every Fred Astaire Dance studio is simple and straightforward: Learning how to dance is always easy and fun!

Our instructors come from all over the world. They are gifted educators, as well as actively-competing, award-winning professional dancers. Many have Fine Arts degrees, and all have completed the rigorous work required to become certified in the Fred Astaire Curriculum, a teaching method unique to our organization.

Our dance curriculum covers the full range of American, Latin-American, International Style, Ballroom Style and Exhibition/Theater Arts dances. It is continuously reviewed by world-famous dance champions and registered judges on the Fred Astaire National Dance Board. Thus, we ensure only the finest, most up-to-date programs for our students.

Our Commitment

Our studios have produced a wealth of both amateur and professional dancers, living embodiments of Fred Astaire’s style and grace.
